The spine is composed of numerous different bones, which are called vertebrae. The vertebrae is interconnected with discs that help to absorb shocks. The actual spine works to protect the spinal cord, which connects the physical body to the brain. The bones, or vertebrae, create a canal, called the spinal canal. When the spinal canal begins to narrow, it may lead to a condition known as spinal stenosis. As a result, the spinal cord is pinched, leaving the patient to feel pain or numbness in their arms, legs, and torso.

Causes of Spinal Stenosis

As we briefly discussed above, one of the main causes of spinal stenosis happens to be arthritis. If you did not know, arthritis occurs when the cushion between bones dissipates. Osteoarthritis can play a role as well, as it may alter the size of the ligaments in the area of the body. As a result of this, pressure is placed on the nerves and cord in the spine, causing spinal stenosis.  Some other causes of this condition may be, but not limited to, tumors, trauma to the spine, Paget’s disease, and disc herniation.

In some cases, individuals can be born with the condition or health ailments that lead to it. In this, symptoms begin to show as early as 30, and as late as 30 years old.

Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis

This condition directly impacts the neck and lower back. It’s important to know that not all symptoms are witnessed by patients. Yet, if a symptom is to become apparent, it will show as back pain, numbness, and/or overall body stiffness.

Some other common symptoms of Spinal Stenosis include:

  • Sciatica: This is when an individual experiences sharp, shooting pain in their legs. Typically, this starts off as a small ache in the lower back or buttocks.
  • Foot drop: When someone feels extreme pain and a decrease in the strength of their leg, it can lead to slapping a foot, or foot drop, on the ground.
  • Difficult time walking or standing: Someone experiencing spinal stenosis may find the vertebrae in their spine to feel squished or pinched when walking or standing.
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control: For some people, this condition can directly affect one’s bowel or bladder.

Note: Should you be experiencing any of the above symptoms, it may be worth having your spine and back looked at. Additionally, if you are experiencing a loss of bladder control, you should visit a professional immediately.
